Reforms in the Field of Chemical Regulation Continue at the Initiative of the Ministry of Environment

Ara Mkrtchyan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA, met with Alen Amirkhanyan, Director of the Acopian Center for the Environment of the American University of Armenia, as well as representatives of the “Green Agenda Armenia” project funded by the Swedish Government. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the process of developing the Draft Law on Chemical Substances, launched within the framework of the program, including its main directions and expected outcomes.
During the discussion, the parties addressed the fundamental approaches to drafting the law, emphasizing the importance of establishing a modern, effective, and internationally compliant legal framework in Armenia.
Sectoral priorities were identified, potential risks were presented, and the socio-economic and environmental impacts of adopting and implementing the law were examined.
Deputy Minister Ara Mkrtchyan emphasized that the new law should become one of the key pillars of Armenia’s chemical safety system.
“Our goal is to create a transparent, safe, and controllable sector, where predictable rules ensure the protection of both the environment and public health,” he noted.
The upcoming steps were defined, the work schedule was agreed upon, and Mkrtchyan emphasized that broad public and professional discussions will be ensured during the development of the draft law so that the document fully reflects sectoral requirements and stakeholder needs.
The Ministry of Environment of the RA will continue cooperating with partner organizations and international stakeholders, aiming to build a safer, greener, and more sustainable Armenia.
